how should I prune it? They love to be pruned heavily.

There is no way how you should do it, designwise I think, only a lot of possibilities.
If it was my tree, and I would want to keep it the actual size, I would cut it where photo ends and drawing starts on this virtual.
But I would cut it at the end of winter, not after the leaves came out.
