Recommended Bonsaisubstrate mixtures

Using the right soil mixture for your Bonsaitrees is crucial. Soil is important to supply your trees with nutrients, but it also needs to drain properly, provide enough aeration, and retain water. Most online Bonsaishops offer ready-mixed soils, but preparing a soil mixture yourself saves money, and gives control over the exact mixture for your particular tree species.

The quality of soil used directly affects the health and vigor of your tree. It¡¯s our experience that unhealthy trees that lack vigor, are very often planted in poor Bonsaisoil. Or worse, planted in normal garden soil. These types of soil harden easily when it gets dry, which is very harmful to the growth of Bonsaitrees and makes proper Watering very difficult.

The soil requires several qualities for it to be considered a good soil mix for your bonsai:

Organic or Inorganic Soils

Soil mixes are described as being either organic or inorganic. Dead plant matters such as peat, leaf-litter, or bark are described as being organic soil components. The potential problem with organic soil components is that organic matter breaks down and reduces drainage over time. Some organic components deteriorate at varying speeds, so it¡¯s hard to say how quickly organic soil becomes harmful. If you¡¯re adamant about using an organic soil mix, we recommend choosing a mixture that uses pine bark. Most potting composts absorb water very poorly once they are completely dry. This is one of the biggest problems for cheap indoor Bonsaitrees purchased at garden centers. You¡¯d think you watered the tree but the water runs past the soil into the bottom of the pot!

Inorganic soil components contain little to no organic matter such as volcanic lava, calcite, and baked/fired clays. They absorb fewer nutrients and water than organic soils but are great for drainage and aeration. The limited absorption capacity also gives us more control over the amount of fertilizer in the soil.

A particle-based, well-structured, inorganic soil allows water to drain quickly and fresh air to continually enter the soil. A compacted organic soil that lacks structure also lacks aeration and drainage which deteriorates the overall health of your tree, and without swift action, will eventually cause root rot and kill your bonsai.

The most common components for Bonsaisoil mixtures are Akadama, Pumice, Lava rock, organic potting compost, and fine gravel also known as grit.

Recommended Bonsaisoil mixtures

Different tree-species demand different soil-mixtures, so make sure to check our Tree species guide to find the optimum mixture for your specific trees. However, we can describe two main mixtures we use for either deciduous or coniferous trees. Both mixtures consist of Akadama for water retention, Pumice for good substrate structure, and Lava rock for aeration and drainage.

Note that both mixtures can, and should, be adapted to your circumstances and/or location. If you know you won¡¯t have enough time to check on your trees twice a day, then add more Akadama or organic potting compost to your mix for increased water retention. If you live somewhere with a wet climate, add more lava rock or grit to enhance the draining qualities of your mixture.

Why do bonsai need a special substrate instead of normal potting soil?

Bonsaisoil is designed to balance drainage, aeration, and moisture retention in a shallow pot. Regular potting soil is too dense and holds too much water, which reduces oxygen around the roots. Bonsairoots need frequent access to air to stay healthy and develop fine branching. A proper substrate prevents compaction over time and allows water to pass through evenly. This combination supports long-term root health, which is essential for stable growth and overall tree vigor.

Can I use normal garden or potting soil for bonsai?

It is not recommended, unless you are using it for trees in early stages of development and placed in large training pots. Garden or standard potting soil tends to compact quickly in small bonsai containers, restricting airflow and drainage. This often leads to root rot or weak growth. While a tree may survive for a short time in such soil, its long-term health will decline. Bonsaicultivation relies on controlled substrates that maintain structure over time. Using proper bonsai soil greatly improves root development, watering control, and overall stability of the tree.

How does soil type affect watering frequency?

Soil composition directly determines how often you need to water. Well-draining bonsai mixes dry out faster because water flows through the particles instead of staying trapped. This requires more frequent but controlled watering. Denser soils retain moisture longer, but this increases the risk of overwatering and root issues. A balanced substrate allows predictable drying cycles, making it easier to judge when watering is needed. In general, better drainage leads to healthier roots but requires attentive watering. When should bonsai substrate be replaced or repotted?

Bonsaisoil should typically be refreshed every 1¨C3 years, depending on species, age, development stage, and soil type. Over time, organic components break down and particles become compacted, reducing drainage and oxygen flow. Repotting allows you to remove old soil, trim roots, and introduce fresh substrate. Younger, fast-growing trees may need more frequent repotting, while older trees can go longer. Signs that soil needs replacing include slow water drainage, poor growth, or roots circling around the inside of the pot.

What is the difference between akadama and other bonsai soil alternatives?

Akadama is a popular clay-based bonsai substrate imported from Japan, known for its balance of water retention and drainage. However, it is not the only option. Alternatives include pumice, lava rock, and organic mixes, often used in combinations depending on climate and species. Pumice improves aeration and drainage, while lava rock adds structure and stability. In most cases, fully inorganic mixes are preferred for consistency and durability. The best choice depends on local climate, watering habits, and tree species. We recommend a mix of Akadama, pumice and a bit of lava rock for most tree species.

What happens to a bonsai in poor or compacted soil?

Poor or compacted soil restricts oxygen flow to the roots and disrupts water balance. This often leads to slow growth, yellowing leaves, or branch dieback over time. Water may either stay trapped too long or fail to penetrate evenly, both of which stress the tree. Root systems become weak and less efficient, making the bonsai more vulnerable to environmental changes. If not corrected, long-term decline is likely.
