Hi what type.of rock is best to use for root over rock and what type of rock should I avoid.
is Sand stone to soft or can I use a lump of slate which is about 5 x 6 inces.

Some sand stone is soft and wither to the touch. Those ones is not very suitable. Some are really hard and suitable. Just rub it hard and see how much sand is coming off.

Some trees dislike lime, if you have that kind of tree lime is best avoided.

The most important is the form and look on the stone, a thin slate do not look natural. You need something that look natural standing up, like a cliff. It also needs crevices for the roots to grow in to look natural. Good rocks is very hard to find, but well worth spending time searching.

A book from long ago observed that you would very rarely look at a tree and say it really needs to have a rock, but quite often might wonder why that rock is there.?

Make sure your design for the tree requires a rock. Out of 40 trees I have one that needs a rock.

Good point Ivan! It makes sense to develop the tree for root over rock in a deep pot for several years before adding the actual rock. Meanwhile looking for a good rock.
