I would think the article is about pinching young shoots, not about defoliation or leaf trimming which is the topic here.

Anyway, none of the teqnices is recomended for a beginner with a tree in development phase.

Yes, I think the technique that fits what you're looking for at this moment is shoot pinching, which you make in order to get shorter internodes and also helps balancing that spring flush...

And that, yes, you should look into for your tree, which is already well formed...
