Hi there.

We were given a dwarf Japanese holly bonsai as an anniversary gift last month. I watered it, placed in a sunny location and enjoyed it, for 2 weeks. That’s when I noticed that the leaves were dry and brittle. The poor thing died! I got a second plant, because I felt bad, transplanted it, as it was terribly root bound, and proceeded to care for it. Diligently I watered it before it dried out too much and kept a close eye on it. It is now doing exactly the same thing the first plant did. What am I doing wrong? I have this plant indoors in front of a west facing window. My ginseng ficus bonsai loves it there. But I’m so sad that this little tree is not going to make it. Please advise.

The air is too dry probably. Also, transplanting.. Did you do any rootwork? Or just oit it in a bigger pot?

Because there were two trees in one pot, I actually cleaned the roots in order to separate the trees. Then I trimmed som of the Roos so the plant would sit in the pot better. I was misting it as well, but you are probably right about it being dry. I live in central Alberta where the weather is dry.
