Hi, my name is Emily and I’m new here. I created this account because my bonsai tree (fondly named Jenna) started having a problem a few days ago. Some background info- I do not know what species this as it was given to me as a gift and did not say. I have had it for a little over a year now and have not changed any conditions and have not had problems until now. I water and mist every other day and I keep it directly in a window. It’s a south facing window so it’s sunny all day but never completely direct light. I did recently bring my bonsai home with me for thanksgiving (I’m in college) but I’ve brought my bonsai home on all vacations in the past and haven’t had issues. A couple days ago however, the leaves on only one branch started turning black and falling off. The pictures are attached. I tried googling but every thing I find says something different. If any of you could let me know what I should do so my bonsai doesn’t die on me I’d be so grateful. Thanks!!

Oh. I was not aware this wasn’t a bonsai. How is it not? Sorry I’m not trying to invade this forum or anything I genuinely thought my plant was a bonsai tree and I’m a botany student so I’d appreciate learning where I went wrong. And still any help with the leaves turning black would be greatly appreciated!

Alright I did some research and it appears I have a ficus ginsengon my hands which is decidedly not a bonsai. Like I said in my original post I had received this plant as a gift and it was my first bonsai so I didn’t know. Although I guess that makes sense why every time I tried to figure out what species it was none of the bonsai species seemed to match lol. Even so, I care a lot about this plant bonsai or not so if anyone has any ideas as to what could cause black leaves I hope you’ll lend me a hand.

I should have just responded in my other post but I thought it looked like some sort of fungus because its starting at the tips and not just the entire leaf. Or it was burned from too much sun. I found this reddit forum which confirms fungus:
