Well, I got over excited at the "Bonsaiin the Blue Ridge" show and bought a japanese maple with a totally wrong for bonsai trunk. After reflecting on it all day I realized my error.? I've been reading up on trunk chops and think this could have a good taper if I chopped off the corkscrew part, but there would be no branches below it. Is that even possible? I know not to do anything until the fall but I'm trying to come up with a game plan. The other option is just to keep it crazy and practice other techniques on it.?
I'm in 7b growing zone, Flat Rock NC.?
Here are pictures of the insanity.

What do you mean when you say totally wrong for bonsai trunk? To me this looks like an excellent shohin material. If you do not like it, sell it to someone that does.

Well as I said I liked the trunk, and I'm a complete newbie.? I guess it's just that when I watch the videos and look at books I see formal upright, informal upright, slanting, and cascade and other styles. I have yet to see a trunk like this but since you know more than I any hints on how you would proceed would be appreciated.?

I re-read my post and it must have been on another thread that I said I bought it because I liked the trunk.

In my opinion this is an excellent material for informal upright shohin tree.

The branches are well placed but far too long. I would work on reducing primary branches and then start on ramification.
