? Hi I’ve just bought my first tree and was wondering if anyone could have a guess at how old it is? Also any advice would be great! Many thanks

Far more important than age is the species. The age of a plant is not important how old it seems is far more. I would say this plant is probably no more than 5 to 7 years old. and it looks that old too. I would think it is a tropical or sub tropical and therefore need winter protection in a greenhouse. You need to find the species and how to grow it, there are species guides on this web site take a look.

I agree that age is not that important.

A good guesstimate on massproduced mallsai is the price in Euro divided by 10 gives you the aproximate age. It is not possible to grow bonsai cheaper than that.

Ok, not an easy species. Needs light be careful with watering, do not water to a schedule, water when soil is almost dry. No fertiliser, and do not re pot.

.....And do not get dissapointed if it dies. Not the best beginner option. Just start over with locally hardy trees outdoors, like people have grown bonsai for thousends of years.

A friend of mine has one that looks similar to this. Tiny leaves, skinny trunk, and thin delicate branches. He called it a Tree of 1,000 Stars. What a romantic name. His has exposed roots also, though not quite as dramatic as yours. That's my guess, anyway. It's beautiful, Good luck with it.

It is a serissa foetida. Or most likelly "was a serissa foetida" now 6 months later.

Common names varies over the globe, what your friend calls his tree tells more about where in the world he/you are than what tree is/was.

My book that I got about 1969 has that name for serissa.

I looked it up after seeing your post. Looks like you're right again! LOL

I even found a reference saying the name “Serissa” is associated with angels or seraphim. Whether that's botanically accurate or not, I don't know. It certainly fits the romantic feel of “Tree of 1,000 Stars.” I love that your 1969 book still calls it that. Some names are just too charming to disappear. I'll bet this tree has got good luck built right into it.
